Hare Krishna worship services are built around Hindu rituals and the chanting of the maha mantra, a sixteen-word Sanskrit mantra believed to bring those who chant it closer to God. At its height, there were about 700 people who lived at New Vrindaban. Today — after a difficult two decades marked by a leader who ended up in jail, being kicked out of the worldwide Hare Krishna movement, and filing for bankruptcy — there are about two dozen left. |
